K I Canada’s RadBlock 65 mg scored and coated potassium iodide tablets ideal products custom-manufactured for this purpose. They are distributed by the hundreds of thousands within the nuclear power generating industry. RadBlock tablets also used in hospitals as a thyroid cancer preventative measure, where people receive treatments for their conditions using radioactive isotopes. K I Canada has been making and distributing RadBlock since 2003 and is licensed by Health Canada’s Health Protection Branch. The tablets are marketed under NPN number 02248172.

Each box and bottle has a printed lot number and expiration date, which averages 12 years from date of manufacture, under normal household storage conditions.

RadBlock tablets are coated to mask against bitterness, and are scored so they can be easily broken to create a children’s-sized dosage, if required.

RadBlock tablets are package in two formats:

1. As RadBlock 20, a box of 20 tablets containing two foil blister strips of 10 65mg potassium iodide tablets each.

2. As RadBlock 200, a bottle of 200 65mg tablets.

Bottles and boxes are safety and security sealed, providing visual evidence against tampering.

Each sealed box and bottle comes with a patient’s instruction and information sheet for proper usage. Ilists dosages based on age / estimated body weight for the age, indications for taking the tablets, warnings, a description of how the tablets work in the body, possible side effects, possible drug interactions and what to do if side effects occur.

About KI Pills- The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) — the federal agency that monitors the safe operation of nuclear stations — now requires that all homes and businesses within 10 km of a nuclear power station receive a supply of potassium iodide (KI) pills. The pills have been available free of charge at select pharmacies, but will now be sent by mail due to increased safety standards.

How Potassium Iodide (KI) Works- KI is a pill or liquid that can be used in radiation emergencies that involve radioactive iodine. KI contains non-radioactive iodine. Non-radioactive iodine helps prevent radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid gland.

Workplace Radiation Incidents- Workplaces like health care facilities research institutions, and industrial operations may use radiation sources.

Improvised Nuclear Device- An Improvised Nuclear Device (IND) is a type of nuclear weapon. When an IND explodes, it gives of four types of energy: a blast wave, intense light, heat, and radiation. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, at the end of the World War II is an example of an IND.

Nuclear Power Plant Emergency- During an emergency at a nuclear power plant, radioactive material could be released into the environment and contaminate air, soil, surfaces, food and water.

Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission: Canadian Potassium iodide (KI) Pill Working Group- In 2019, the CNSC established a Potassium Iodide (KI) Pill Working Group and Advisory Committee to provide clarity on the existing plans and associated responsible authorities to distribute KI pills in the Ingestion Planning Zone (IPZ), in the event of an emergency at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station.

Patient Information Sheet for RadBlock- Take RadBlock or give to children only when public health officials advise you. In a radiation emergency, radioactive iodine could be released into the air. RadBlock protects the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine. Children up to 18 years of age are most at risk. It is important that you follow the instructions carefully when administering RadBlock to children.

What is a dirty bomb?- A dirty bomb is a mix of explosives, such as dynamite, and radioactive powder or pellets. It is also known as a radiological dispersal device (RDD).

Dirty Bomb or Radiological Dispersal Device-The main danger from a dirty bomb comes from the explosion, not the radiation. The explosion can cause serious injuries and property damage.

Radiation Emergencies and Pregnancy- After a radiation emergency, pregnant women should follow instructions from emergency officials and seek medical attention as soon as emergency officials say it is safe to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions About Potassium Iodide

In Canada, Health Canada, or in the United States, the FDA, is the Federal agency responsible for decisions about appropriate thresholds and dosages for use of potassium iodide:

What is potassium iodide?

Potassium iodide is a salt, similar to table salt.  Its chemical symbol is KI.  It is routinely added to table salt to make it 'iodized'. Potassium iodide,if taken in time and at the appropriate dosage, blocks the thyroid gland's uptake of radioactive iodine and thus could reduce the risk of thyroid cancers and other diseases that might otherwise be caused by exposure to radioactive iodine that could be dispersed by a terrorist activity or nuclear accident.

What is the role of potassium iodide in radiological emergency preparedness?

The purpose of radiological emergency preparedness is to protect people from the effects of radiation exposure after a dirty bomb or accident at a nuclear power plant.  Evacuation is the most effective protective measure in the event of a radiological emergency because it protects the whole body (including the thyroid gland and other organs) from all radionuclides and all exposure pathways.  However, in situations when evacuation is not feasible and in-place sheltering is substituted as an effective protective action, administering potassium iodide is a reasonable, prudent, and inexpensive supplement to evacuation and sheltering.

Potassium iodide is a special kind of protective measure in that it offers very specialized protection.  Potassium iodide protects the thyroid gland against internal uptake of radioiodines that may be released in the unlikely event of nuclear exposure.

What is the benefit of taking potassium iodide during a radiological accident?

When potassium iodide is ingested, it is taken up by the thyroid gland.  In the proper dosage, and taken at the appropriate time, it will effectively saturate the thyroid gland in such a way that inhaled or ingested radioactive iodines will not be accumulated in the thyroid gland.  The risk of thyroid effects is reduced.  Such thyroid effects resulting from radioiodine uptakes due to inhalation or ingestion, or both, could result in acute, chronic, and delayed effects.  Acute effects from high doses include thyroiditis, while chronic and delayed effects include hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer.

Can individual members of the public obtain potassium iodide?

Health Canada has approved potassium iodide as an over-the-counter medication.  As with any medication, individuals should check with their doctor or pharmacist before using it.

What are the recommended dosages of potassium iodide?

Please see chart shown above.
