The DX-2 is identical to the DX-1, except for its operating range and calibration.  Whereas the analog meter on the DX-1 ranges up to 10 mR/hr, giving way to an additional audible beep for radioactivity levels beyond that point, the DX-2 goes all the way up to 100 mR/hr or 1,000 µSv/hr with its dual scale meter.

The DX-2 still provides the audible clicking as in the DX-1, but lacks the additional audible beep of the DX-1 in exchange for its higher range meter.

The DX-2 also offers an adjustable calibration oscillator tied to a screw on the back of the instrument, whereas the DX-1 has only a "fixed" calibration.

In deciding between the DX-1 and DX-2, look at it this way:  If you want to know whether or not something is radioactive, the DX-1 is generally sufficient, and also offers that additional audible warning beep.  If it is important for you to not only detect radioactivity, but also to quantify its level, for instance, 15 mR/hr versus 60 mR/hr, then the DX-2 would be more suitable.  Also choose the DX-2 over the DX-1 if you want an adjustable calibration.

Also note that among all of our featured Geiger counters, including both Pocket and Probe style models, the DX-2 is one of the few whose meter registers up to 100 mR/hr.  Most other units have a maximum readout of 50 mR/hr, in contrast.
